The Humanitarian Action Conference 2020 (HAC), which was held on Saturday the 17th of October, to coincide with the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, recognized by the United Nations, was organized by InnerCity Mission, under the auspices of Chris Oyakhilome Foundation International (COFI). It was a successful convening of all critical players and stakeholders in the humanitarian and development sector, who came together to discuss realistically actionable strategies to address the issue of poverty in a sustainable way. The theme of this maiden edition of the InnerCity Mission (ICM) 2020 Humanitarian Action Conference was: “Eradicating Poverty: Rethinking the Strategy”.

The Special Assistant to the President on Women Affairs and Administration on behalf of the First Lady of Nigeria, Dr. Hajo Sani together with the most Rev. Tom Amenkhienan, the Esteemed director of the InnerCity Mission, the deputy country representative for UNICEF Mrs. Rushnan Murtaza, and the country director of Action Aid International Dr. Mrs. Ene Obi unveiled the ”Give a Meal” app to the world at the conference. Through this app, you can do good with a tap of a button to provide much-needed food for children and families in vulnerable conditions with just $1. Globally, food deprivation still claims the life of needy children. Every three seconds and nearly half of all deaths in children under the age of five are attributed to malnutrition. The “Give a Meal” app is the InnerCity Mission’s commitment and contribution to the achievement of zero hunger Sustainable Development Goal 2 using technology. The InnerCity Mission is set to provide 100 million meals to vulnerable children and families around the world where the need is greatest.

Dr. Hajo Sani was involved in unveiling the new app.

Hunger is strongly interconnected with poverty, and it involves interactions among an array of social, political, demographic, and societal factors. People living in poverty frequently face household food insecurity, use inappropriate care practices, and live in unsafe environments that have low access to quality water, sanitation, and hygiene, and inadequate access or availability to health services and education—all of which contribute to hunger.

“Lack of food exposes children to unscrupulous vendors of extremism who offers little to motivate and convert them into cultism and also violent extremism” – Dr. Mrs. Ene Obi, Country Director, Action Aid International.

Hunger is a common enemy, but it is also one of the world’s most solvable problem. Around the world, more than enough food is produced to feed the global population—but more than 690 million people still go hungry. After steadily declining for a decade, world hunger is on the rise, affecting 8.9 percent of people globally. Children facing severe hunger can’t grow to their full potentials. Families facing hunger risk losing livelihoods and having to leave their homes. Hunger is the distress associated with a lack of food. The threshold for food deprivation, or undernourishment, is fewer than 1,800 calories per day. The “Give a Meal” app has made fighting hunger easier to achieve. This app gives the opportunity to provide meals for vulnerable children and families around the world where the need is greatest.

If these children are to achieve success and independence, it is the belief of the InnerCity Mission for Children that they must be active participants in changing their own circumstances. In order to do this, the Mission provides them with the tools, resources, and faith that they will need to secure their future. The organization is proud to operate under the auspices of the Chris Oyakhilome Foundation International to help these children live prosperous, fulfilling lives in the service of the Lord. Through this rewarding partnership, both organizations aspire to give the life of every indigent child meaning, give them hope, and provide for them a prosperous future.

In 2015, world leaders charted a new set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The second of these is to “end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture” by 2030.

InnerCity Mission which was started in December 2004 after the Founder, Rev Dr Pastor Chris Oyakhilome (D.Sc., D.D.), the President of LoveWorld Inc, made a profound statement “Every Child is your Child”, believes in the future of indigent children and taking action to reach and meet their needs is one of the core motivations.

Over the years, the programs and interventions in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have impacted the lives of millions of indigent beneficiaries mostly children around the world in underserved, hard-to-reach communities.

“Educating our children particularly the girl child contributes significantly to building resilient societies, reducing the scourge of poverty and advancing the achievement of the SDGs which is why we are calling for multisectoral collaboration” – Rev. Tom Amenkhienan, Chairman Board of Directors (the InnerCity Mission for Children).
